Derek was born on May 14, 1987, in Topeka, Kansas, to Craig A. and Jayme L. McKinney. He grew up surrounded by love, along with his two older sisters, Dara (Myers) and Dawn (Membrino). From an early age, Derek had a knack for bringing people together and creating lasting memories. He often organized unique experiences with friends and family, leaving behind a legacy of joy and camaraderie.
Derek’s leadership and dedication were evident during his time at Shawnee Heights High School, where he led the drumline before graduating in 2006. He began his college career at Washburn University and later transferred to Kansas State University. As a proud member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity, Derek formed lifelong friendships and developed the skills and knowledge that set the stage for a successful professional career.

An Adventurous Spirit
Derek’s adventurous nature was reflected in his many pursuits and accomplishments. His bucket list included skydiving, parasailing in the Alps, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, and traveling throughout Europe. His fearless approach to life also extended to social encounters—Derek was known to strike up casual conversations with celebrities, often buying them a drink and sharing a laugh.
Family and Loved Ones
Derek is survived by his parents, Craig and Jayme (Brubaker) McKinney; his sisters, Dara (Bradon) Myers of Wichita, Kansas, and Dawn (Kenny) Membrino of Topeka; and his beloved nieces and nephews, Grant and Portia Myers, and Gauge and Bailey Membrino. He is also survived by his maternal grandfather, Dewey (Marylie) Brubaker of Topeka, along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins who will forever cherish his memory.
Derek was preceded in death by his grandmother, Barbara Brubaker; great-grandparents Irene Lamond, Dorothy Neal, and Matilda (Dot) Brubaker; great-aunt and uncle Harlan and Ruth Johnson; and his cherished dog, Bear.
Funeral Services and Final Resting Place
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at Topeka Bible Church, located at 1101 SW Mulvane St., Topeka, Kansas. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Following the ceremony, cremation will take place, and Derek’s remains will be interred privately at Memorial Park Cemetery.
